We are very fortunate that both Pandit Nirmalya Dey and Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma have offered to provide group and private instruction while they are in Portland. They are both excellent teachers that have taught at prestigious music programs including the University of Delhi, Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, and the Dhrupad Gurukul in Delhi.
Participants will receive voice training on techniques to produce vibrant sound, tonal embellishment, and accurate intonation. Panditji will also provide instruction on the tonal shades (shruti) of each note (swara), the principles of raga exposition (alap), and Dhrupad theory. The group lessons will be approximately 90 minutes in length and will occur on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The beginning group classes will take place from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The time for the intermediate group classes will be determined based on the schedules of those interested in participating. Class size will be limited so please register early. Each class will cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
